Descrizione
The Seudre estuary is home to a large portion of the population of the nanmetum subspecies of the Pettazzurro, which is endemic to the French Atlantic coast. With a bit of luck it can be observed here (other good spots are the Pointe de la Coubre, Marais de Brouage and RNMO). Some breeding birds of the Moulin des Loges reserve are Cutrettola, Usignolo di fiume, Rondine, Cavaliere d'Italia and more.
Nearby Spatola and different heron species, such as Nitticora are breeding, as well as Sterna comune and Nibbio bianco. Besides from that you can observe Marzaiola and several limicole species during migration, such as Combattente, Pittima reale (keep your eyes open for the islandica subspecies), Gambecchio comune etc. (see the list below). The open landscape also allows good observations of migrating passerines, like Stiaccino, Balia nera, Codirosso or Culbianco, as well as Torcicollo. On the nearby fields you can observe Pernice rossa, Piviere dorato (only during winter), Pavoncella and Strillozzo. Note that in end of August the hunt for waders and ducks begins, which makes good observations harder.
In the summer 2025 a Piovanello pettorale and a Albastrello were stationary on the side of the road for a while. I was also able to observe a Garzetta x Airone schistaceo hybrid several times in the area.
