Vanhankaupunginlahti is Helsinki’s great urban wetland. It is an internationally important bird area and a Ramsar site. It combines reedbeds, mudflats, forest edges, and open water, with year‑round birding and excellent infrastructure. There are several bird observation towers in the area where you'll have great view over the bay.
You can see among many other species: Oca facciabianca, Cigno reale, Cigno selvatico, Mestolone, Marzaiola, Canapiglia, Fischione, Alzavola, Svasso maggiore, Colombella, Porciglione, Beccaccia di mare, Chiurlo maggiore, Beccaccino, Pettegola, Piro piro piccolo, Pantana, Sterna maggiore, Sterna comune, Cormorano, Tarabuso, Falco di palude, Aquila di mare, Picchio dorsobianco. Picchio rosso minore. Sparviere, Lodolaio, Canapino maggiore, Forapaglie comune, Cannaiola di Blyth, Cannareccione, Locustella fluviatile, Rampichino alpestre, Averla piccola, Usignolo maggiore, Tordo sassello, Cesena, Pispola, Basettino, Ciuffolotto scarlatto, Torcicollo, Picchio cenerino.

Vanhankaupunginlahti sits on the eastern edge of central Helsinki. From Helsinki you can get there by bus. Get off at bus stop Viikintie (1). Most carparks are limited time only. Press P on the map for directions to a parking spot. Explore the area by foot or bike (by bike you can't go everywhere).
