Descrizione

La Selva Biological Station is a top birding site not used by too many birders. Easy walking and birds tend to be obliging and really good for photography. The birdlist here is extensive but hummingbirds highlights include Band-tailed Barbthroat, Long-billed Hermit, Bronze-tailed Plumeleteer and Rufous-tailed Hummingbird.

Other birds you can observe are Crested Guan, Great Curassow, Sungrebe, Snowy Cotinga, Black-throated Trogon, (Northern) Slaty-tailed Trogon, Chestnut-colored Woodpecker, Collared Aracari and many more. Tanagers and Flycatchers are abundant including Crimson-collared Tanager, Golden-hooded Tanager, Long-tailed Tyrant and Grey-capped Flycatcher.

Accesso

We hired a guide for the whole trip including La Selva Biological Station where we stayed 4 nights. There is little point in a day visit - the site is too large to do it justice without staying for dawn birding and it's not open to day visitors before 9am! I had 67 lifers during the stay with most being photographed. From San Jose it is about a 1hr. 40 mins (90 km.) drive north using via Ctra. Braulio Carrillo and Corredor Noratlántico (R 32) then Ruta Nacional Primaria R4.

Birding on foot is essential, there are hard pathways and grassy trails in and out of wooded areas with more open grassy fields. The cabins are 1/2 mile from the main area where the cafeteria and suspension bridge is located. The bridge leads to the hiking trails.
