The Put van Vlissegem was created by the extraction of sand and clay and has salty water. Because the lake does not freeze over during the winter months, the lake attracts wintering water birds such as Fischione, Mestolone, Codone, Alzavola and Svasso piccolo. Breeding birds include Forapaglie comune, Porciglione, Tuffetto, Volpoca and Moretta. During migration there is a chance of seeing wading birds such as Totano moro, Pantana, Piro piro culbianco, Piro piro piccolo and Combattente. There is a bird hide on the western bank of the lake.

Nederlands: De Put van Vlissegem is ontstaan door de winning van zand en klei en heeft zilt water. Doordat de plas tijdens de wintermaanden niet toevriest trekt de put overwinterende watervogels zoals Fischione, Mestolone, Codone, Alzavola en Svasso piccolo. Broedvogels zijn onder meer Forapaglie comune, Porciglione, Tuffetto, Volpoca en Moretta. Tijdens de trektijd kans op steltlopers als Totano moro, Pantana, Piro piro culbianco, Piro piro piccolo en Combattente. Op de westelijke oever is een vogelkijkhut.
