Montroeul-au-Bois, with its many agricultural fields dotted with bushes and hedges, is a very good site for observing small passerines typical of fields and meadows such as Pettazzurro, Pispola, Zigolo giallo, Cannaiola verdognola and Bigiarella. Other birds typical of agricultural areas can be observed in Montroeul. For example, Starna, Pavoncella, Quaglia or Fagiano comune.
The proximity to Pétrieu wood is also very interesting because you can observe quite a few forest birds there such as Sparviere, Fiorrancino, Ghiandaia, and Picchio muratore. In the surrounding hedges, there are a lot of Capinera, a few Sterpazzola and some Beccafico.
Montroeul is also a very good place for the observation of owls such as Civetta, Allocco, Gufo comune and the rare Gufo reale which sings in the spring in the depths of the wood. You can also find some wintering raptors such as Smeriglio and Albanella reale.
Finally, the village is also a great place for spring and autumn migration. Many birds pass over the village in the spring. For example, Falco pecchiaiolo, Cicogna bianca, the rare Nibbio reale, Zafferano and even, an an exceptional sighting, a Avvoltoio monaco in the spring of 2023. Every spring many Merlo dal collare and Culbianco stop to take a short break in their migration. The same goes for the autumn migration where squadrons of Tordo sassello, Cesena and Tordela pass at full speed above the village, sometimes even making prolonged halts.

Français: Un petit village au naturel où l'on retrouve de nombreux oiseaux au fil des saisons. Avec ses nombreux terrains agricoles parsemés de buissons et de haies, Montroeul est un très bon site pour l'observation de petits passereaux typiques des champs et prairies tel que la Pettazzurro, le Pispola, le Zigolo giallo, la Cannaiola verdognola et la Bigiarella. D'autres oiseaux typiques des zones agricoles évoluent à Montroeul. Par exemple, la Starna, le Pavoncella, la Quaglia ou encore le Fagiano comune.
La proximité avec le bois de Pétrieu est elle aussi très intéressante car nous pouvons y observer pas mal d'oiseaux des fôrets comme l'Sparviere, le Fiorrancino, le Ghiandaia, ou bien la Picchio muratore. Dans les haies alentours, on retrouve beaucoup pas mal Capinera, quelques Sterpazzola et l'une ou l'autre Beccafico. Montroeul est aussi un très bon lieu pour l'observation de chouettes et hiboux tel que la Civetta, la Allocco, le Gufo comune et le rare Gufo reale qui chante au printemps dans les fin fonds du bois. On peut aussi y retrouver de quelques rapaces hivernants tel que le Smeriglio ou encore le Albanella reale.
Enfin, Le village est aussi un super lieu pour la migration printanière et automnale. De nombreux oiseaux passent au dessus du village au printemps. Par exemple, la Falco pecchiaiolo, la Cicogna bianca, le rare Nibbio reale, le Zafferano et même, lors d'une observation exceptionnelle, un Avvoltoio monaco au printemps 2023. Chaque printemps font halte de nombreux Merlo dal collare et Culbianco pour faire une petite pause dans leur migration. De même pour les migrations automnales où des escadrons de Tordo sassello, Cesena et Tordela passent à pleine vitesse au dessus du village, faisant même parfois des haltes prolongées.

Montroeul-au-Bois is located about 14 km east of Tournai. There are parking spaces at Place de Montroeul-au-Bois, at the foot of the church. Click on the P in the map for directions. The circular route indicated on the map is about 7 km.
