Since 1999 Blokkersdijk is protected as a nature reserve and also part of the natura 2000 network. Blokkersdijk consists of a large lake and in spring the reedbeds come alive with the chattering songs of warblers like Pettazzurro , Forapaglie comune , Cannaiolaand Migliarino di palude. A rich diversity of different water and wetland species can be observed from the hide like Falco di palude , Svasso piccolo , Spatola , Airone bianco maggiore , Martin pescatore , Voltolino. It's one of the best places in Belgium to encouter Fistione turco. Many northern overwintering birds can be seen on the lake during the winter months like Tarabuso , Quattrocchi , Pesciaiola , Spioncello, Cigno selvatico and Smergo maggiore. But also during migration periodes this is a true birding hotspot as the mud flats and its proximity with the Scheldt river attract a lot of migratory terns (Mignattino comune , Mignattino alibianche and Mignattino piombato) and waders (Piro piro boschereccio , Pantana , Totano moro). During these times you can spot in the grasslands around the lake Stiaccino , Culbianco and Saltimpalo. In the more thorny bushes and shrubs you can hear the marvelous song of the Usignolo. In the last 20 years over 220 native bird species are observed here, and around 160 to 170 are seen annually.

Nederlands: Blokkersdijk is een echte vogelmagneet in de nabijheid van de haven van Antwerpen en de Schelde. Sinds 1999 is Blokkersdijk beschermd als natuurgebied en tevens onderdeel van het Natura 2000 netwerk. Het bestaat uit een groot meer en in het voorjaar komen de rietvelden tot leven met de kwetterende liederen van zangers als Pettazzurro, Forapaglie comune, Cannaiolaen Migliarino di palude. Vanuit de vogelkijkhut is een rijke diversiteit aan verschillende soorten vogels te zien, zoals Falco di palude, Svasso piccolo, Spatola, Airone bianco maggiore, Martin pescatore, Voltolino. Het is een van de beste plekken in België om Fistione turco te zien. In de wintermaanden zijn op en bij het meer veel noordelijke overwinterende vogels te zien, zoals Tarabuso, Quattrocchi, Pesciaiola, Spioncello, Cigno selvatico en Smergo maggiore. Maar ook tijdens trekperiodes is dit een echte vogel hotspot aangezien de slikken en de nabijheid van de Schelde veel trekkende sterns (Mignattino comune, Mignattino alibianche en Mignattino piombato) en steltlopers aantrekken (Piro piro boschereccio , Pantana , Totano moro). Tijdens de vogeltrek kun je de graslanden rond het meer afspeuren voor Stiaccino, Culbianco en Saltimpalo. In de doornstruiken en struiken hoor je het prachtige lied van de Usignolo. In de afgelopen 20 jaar zijn hier meer dan 220 vogelsoorten waargenomen, ongeveer 160 tot 170 per jaar.
