Descrizione

Purga Nature Reserve is a small 140 hectare reserve that has national significance as one of the last stands of critically endangered Swamp Tea-tree (Melaleuca irbyana) in Australia. The reserve also supports a koala population within the endangered Blue Gum (Eucalyptus tereticornis) community along Purga Creek.

But the small reserve also attracts many birds. Best birding is in the mixed plant communities around the eastern, north-eastern and southern edges.

Birds you can observe include Brown Quail, Cockatiel, Southern Boobook, Tawny Frogmouth, Australian King-Parrot, Little Lorikeet, Rainbow Lorikeet, Scaly-breasted Lorikeet, Superb Fairywren, Red-backed Fairywren, several species of honeyeaters, Speckled Warbler, Rufous Whistler, Rose Robin, Golden-headed Cisticola, Mistletoebird and Double-barred Finch.

Accesso

Purga Nature Reserve is located 15 minutes southwest of Ipswich. Head south on the Ipswich–Boonah Road (Route 93), then turn onto Middle Road. The reserve has car parking and is open daily from 6 AM to 6 PM. Press P on the map for directions to the parking.

The reserve has two Class 2 tracks for easy level walking, including the 350-metre wheelchair-accessible Tea Tree Boardwalk Circuit, raised high enough to keep your feet dry even if the wetlands have had rain. There are picnic tables and compost toilets on site. The circular trail shown on the map is about 2 km but can sometimes be partly overgrown.
