Vardakar (Horom) Reservoir is a quiet birding spot in Shirak, attracting waterbirds, waders, and raptors in a scenic highland setting.
Vardakar (Horom) Reservoir lies in the open highlands of Shirak, surrounded by grasslands and low hills. The mix of open water, muddy shores, and steppe habitats attracts a variety of birds, including Casarca, Pellicano comune, Fringuello alpino and various gulls and terns. Raptors like Albanella minore and Poiana codabianca can also be seen hunting nearby. The peaceful setting, lack of disturbance, and wide views make it a rewarding spot for birders seeking waterbirds and steppe species in a quiet, scenic landscape.
Vardakar Reservoir is located in Shirak Province, near the village of Vardakar. It can be reached by car via local roads from Artik or Maralik. There is no direct public transport to the reservoir, so a private vehicle or taxi is recommended. You can park near the reservoir and explore the area on foot along the shoreline and surrounding fields. A visit typically takes 1–4 hours, depending on bird activity and walking routes.
Sometimes the reservoir guard may say that photography is not allowed or ask you to leave, but it’s usually possible to reach an agreement with him (he likely doesn’t speak or understand English). He usually arrives around 9–10 AM, so it's recommened to visit the place earlier.
