Summer Leys is an important winter refuge for Urtönd, Gargönd, Rauðhöfðaönd, Vepja, Heiðlóa, Gulönd, gulls, Hrossagaukur, Skógarsnípa and the scrapes are a stopover for migrant Spói and other waders. There is a breeding colony of Sílaþerna.
