This variety of environment is being enriched by thinning out existing woods and reducing the amount of conifers. A wide variety are birds are attracted to the area, including Laufmeisa, Barrmeisa, Hrossagaukur, Trjáspör and Gulerla. The large water area attracts various Hirundines and Terns in summer, but winter migrants are notable, including up to 10,000 wildfowl (which contributes to the site's status as a Site of Special Scientific Interest).
