This a nature reserve consisting of differing woodlands bordering, and including, part of a large, mature reservoir. It is managed by the local Wildlife Trust.
The woodlands include conifer plantations, mature deciduous woodland, marshy woodland and there are also meadows and ridings. This variety of environment is being enriched by thinning out existing woods and reducing the amount of conifers. A wide variety are birds are attracted to the area, including Laufmeisa, Barrmeisa, Hrossagaukur, Trjáspör and Gulerla. The large water area attracts various Hirundines and Terns in summer, but winter migrants are notable, including up to 10,000 wildfowl (which contributes to the site's status as a Site of Special Scientific Interest).
Access to the site is easiest by car. There are two parking areas (both liable for fees); one is at the western end of the causeway and the other is at the fishing lodge at the eastern end of the causeway, where access permits may be purchased and there are toilets and a shop.
Bus number 10, between Northampton and Kettering. calls in Holcott, about half a mile from Pitsford Water fishing lodge and bus X7, between Northampton and Leicester, calls in Brixworth, 2.8 miles from the causeway across Pitsford Water. The causeway is part of the road between Brixworth and Holcott.
Within the site, access is entirely on foot and may become extremely wet in parts.
The postcode of the fishing lodge is NN6 9SJ.
The route around the reserve is about 7 miles, with no short cuts. It's recommended to allow a full day for a full circuit, to allow time for rest and refreshment and bird spotting. There are no facilities within the reserve, other than at the fishing lodge, so food and drink will need to be taken.
