Description

Martin Mere is a Site of Special Interest. The name of the centre comes from the mere on the west side of the reserve, which is ringed by more than ten observation hides. This reserve is at its best in winter, attracting huge flocks of Heiðagæs, Rauðhöfðaönd and Urtönd, many Álft, and occasional rarer birds such as Snjógæs, Ljóshöfðaönd and Green-winged Teal. It is also excellent for wintering birds of prey such as Bláheiðir, Förufálki and Smyrill. Waders such as Jaðrakan, Rúkragi and Stelkur can be seen from hides as well as rarer smaller birds such as Fjallafinka in the woodlands.
