Country park in the middle of an urban housing development. Mixture of old deciduous woodland, scrub and heath. Small marshy area and a lake.
At 150 hectares, High Woods Country Park in Colchester derives from the once much larger medieval royal hunting forest of Kingswood. The park is a designated Local Wildlife Site (LWS). Nice for peaceful early morning walking and birding. Næturgali in spring, woodpeckers, Hnotigða and Skógfeti. Warblers in the scrub areas.
High Woods Country Park lies between Turner Road and Ipswich Road beyond North Station in Colchester. For the Turner Road entrance and car park follow the signs for the A&E Hospital or Colchester North Station, then pick up the brown tourist signs. Follow signs from Tesco at High Woods for Chanterelle car park. Free parking at Chanterelle car park or paid parking at the visitor centre car park. High Woods Country Park is open seven days a week all year round. Visitor Centre opening times: September to March: Open 5 days a week, Wednesday to Sunday, 10am until 4pm. April to August: Open 7 days a week, 9.30am till 4.30pm. Public toilets are adjacent to the visitor centre and are open daily from 9.30am to 4.30pm. There are three circular trails identified by coloured way markers. The circular walk indicated on the map is about 2,5 mile (4 km).
Bus: There is a frequent bus service to the country park from Colchester City Centre. Numbers S1, S2, S3 and 68 buses can be caught from the bus stand (stop Ec) in Head Street. They drop you within a few minutes walk of the visitor centre. Train: High Woods Country Park is a 10 minute walk from Colchester North Station.
