The Gurten is Bern's local hill with a great view. Birds of prey migration can be observed very well at this location in autumn.
From August to October, numerous thermal gliding birds can be observed passing through the skies around Gurten. The best time is late August and early September. Then large numbers of Býþjór are possible. With a bit of luck, Kolstorkur will also pass by. Other regular species are: Músvákur, Sparrhaukur, Gáshaukur, Turnfálki, Gunnfálki, Svölugleða, Vatnagleða, Gjóður, Gráheiðir, Brúnheiðir and Hvítstorkur. In later autumn large flocks of Hringdúfa pass by. From time to time Alpasvölungur can be observed on food flights.
The Gurten hill is located directly south of Bern city center. The best way is to take the Gurtenbahn funicular that runs from the city to the Gurten. From there it is only a 10 minutes walk to the viewing and observation point.
