Stångåymnning is a river mouth in Roxen near Linköping. Its turbulent waters, and shallow waters makes Stångåmynning especially good for winter birding.
Stångåmynning is best during winter time when it is usually one of few (along with Kungsbro, and Norsholm), areas with open water during winter. Due to its proximity to Linköping and Gärstadverken (large recycling plant, also described on Birdingplaces) it is often the most bird rich and varied of these places. Common wintering birds at Stångåymnning are Skúfönd, Hvinönd, Gulönd, Stokkönd, Bleshæna, Haförn, Hnúðsvanur, Silfurmáfur, Svartbakur, Álft, and Dílaskarfur on the lake. On land Grágæs, Kanadagæs and Grásvarri can be found although the amount of birds varies with the snow cover.
Among the rarer wintering birds Duggönd, Skutulönd, Urtönd, Rauðhöfðaönd, Gargönd are sometimes found among ducks. Other birds that can be spotted are Stormmáfur, Hettumáfur, Dverggoði, Toppgoði, Mjallhegri, Keldusvín and Hvítönd. During the years many rarer winterers like Hvítmáfur have been found. The amount of birds varies strongly with how much ice there is on other areas of the lake and, how cold it has been, and how much it has snowed.
During other seasons than winter large amounts of dabbling ducks can often be found along with many terns, gulls, and many reed-birds. The proximity to Gärstad verken also makes it so that large amounts of gulls rest at Stångåmynning especially during lte autumn and winter. In these groups Sílamáfur and Klapparmáfur are sometimes found.
