A 400 hectare forest with an almost permanent lagoon and areas of riverside forest.
The area around Laguna del Valchico is a former military shooting range, with a great diversity of species. More than 150 species have been recorded here, including residents, wintering, breeding, and migrating birds. The area serves as an ecological corridor connecting large natural areas.
You can observe species such as Gráhegri, Bláþyrill, Dverggoði, Bjarthegri and ducks in the lagoon area. Raptors such as Svölugleða, Vatnagleða, Músvákur, Turnfálki, Gáshaukur, Sparrhaukur, Náttugla, Úfur, Kattugla, Skopugla, Skálmörn, Skassörn, Snákerna, Kuflgammur and Gæsagammur. Also bird species typical of riverbanks and scrub areas such as Laufglói, Herfugl and Steppusvarri. I have added those birds to the bird list that seem most important and frequent to me, although there are many other interesting birds that are only occasionally observed.

Laguna del Valchico is located on the western outskirts of Madrid. The area can be accessed mainly from the Mingorría street area (Madrid) by car, bus (line 65) and metro (L10 - Colonia Jardín, marked with 1 on the map) 500 m away. This access is the closest to the lower area of the lagoon.
There is also access by car in the parking lot of the light rail depots with access from the M-511 road, exit c/ Edgar Neville, or by public transport (light rail tram, Cocheras or Retamares stops on the ML3 line). This access is the closest to the upper area of holm oak and broom groves. This would be the access with the best accessibility for wheelchairs, to observe from the upper part or go down the main paths with relative ease.
Once you access the area, it can be covered entirely by dirt roads and paths, on foot or by bicycle. Routes can be planned from less than 1 km (around the lagoon, for example) to routes of up to 10 km covering the entire area.
