Description

In the picturesque and quiet coastal village of Sonabia Gæsagammur live side by side with gulls. Located at the mouth of the Oriñón estuary, this area was declared protected in 1986. Mount Candina harbours the only coastal colony of Gæsagammur in Spain and also the closest to the sea in Europe. A unique area where more than 100 pairs of vultures nest, many of them on cliffs up to 250 meters high, all next to Sonabia beach. You can observe the colony of Gæsagammur , but also have the chance to see Skarngammur, Snákerna, Skálmörn, Förufálki, Svölugleða, Vatnagleða and of course all kinds of seabirds like Súla.

Access

You can park in the village of Sonabia and there are paths up the cliffs and down to the beach. There's also the possibility of walking out to the Ballena headland (as it's known locally, because it looks like a whale in the water) at low tide. The trail that is shown on the map is about 2 km. But you can also walk a trail on the other side of the bay. Note: There is a 2m height restriction on the entrance road.
