Description
The harbour of Funchal is a fairly large harbour and is mainly used for tourists and as a stopover for ships that want to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The area provides an ideal roosting habitat for many species of shorebird, like Klapparmáfur, Sílamáfur and Hettumáfur. The shoreline is used by many species of wader, like Spói, Tildra, Sanderla and Lindastelkur.
The harbour waters are a feeding area for multiple species of tern, being mainly Sílaþerna and Roðaþerna, but sometimes also Þaraþerna.
Just outside the harbour and onto the Atlantic Ocean, large flocks of Urðaskrofa can be observed. Small numbers of Svöludrúði can be seen too. Other species of shearwater can be seen during migration, like Skrofa and Barolo Shearwater.
In the last decades, many species of rare migratory birds have been observed in this harbour, like Hringmáfur, Bjartmáfur and, in 2011, a Gulhegri.
