Ilene Nature Reserve is protected by the Ramsar convention of wetlands and has unique qualities. The bird life in particular is outstanding.
Våtmark Ilene is a wetland area where migrating birds rest, when they return after wintertime, but also in summer and during autumn migration. The birds can be observed from the path or from the bird observation tower. There is a small visitor center (Besøkssenter Våtmark Ilene) also with a small garden, open some sundays, and they serve coffee and waffles. Among the birds you can encounter are Gultittlingur, Seftittlingur, Brandönd, Helsingi, Urtönd, Æðarfugl, Hvinönd, Toppönd, Lyngstelkur, Stelkur, Lindastelkur, Sílaþerna, Sönglævirki, Vatnalóa, Sílamáfur and Húmgali.
Parking spots by the Auli river or Korten in Tønsberg city. You can park in either end of Grevestien. Click on a P in the map for directions. From the parking walk about 10-15 minutes, to the visitor center, and you can watch bird underway. You can also use a bicycle. Note: Dogs are also welcome, but are required to be kept on a lead from April 1st to August 20th. Maybe you can keep it on a lead all year round for the sake of other hikers and the birds in the reserve? At the gate to the cow pasture there is water for thirsty dogs.
On www.ilene.no you can see images of the area and the site also has a live camera from the area. Or see the Facebook page. Click on one of the links below.
