Description
In addition to Pūkorokoro Miranda, the wader roost at the Piako River is a key site for shorebirds in the Firth of Thames. Both locations can be visited easily in a single trip during one high tide. Alongside large flocks of Bar-tailed Godwit and Red Knot, the site often supports less common species such as Sharp-tailed Sandpiper and occasional rarities such as Black-tailed Godwit. In past years it has also been home to Glossy Ibis, being company to the Royal Spoonbill. The ponds often attract marsh terns too, including Australian Tern and Whiskered Tern. Furthermore, there are often large numbers of ducks, herons, and shags present.
A large hide offers excellent views over most of the ponds, and you can also walk along the dam to scan further ahead and check the adjacent fields.

Access
On the 25, about 12 minutes before Thames, turn North into Campbell Rd and at its end turn left into Shelly Beach Rd. Take the small bridge over the ditch up to the dam and you will see the ponds and bird hide.
