Description

"Zandput Culemborg" is an old sand extraction area, consisting of a small lake and is surrounded by a poplar and willow forest. Adjacent to the forest, large pastures draw the landscape. The lake itself isn't a hotspot for waterbirds. Species like Toppgoði and Skúfönd can be seen. The shoreline and its overhanging branches are a great spot for Bláþyrill. The area provides also an important habitat for the Western Clubtail (dragonfly).

The forest is a great spot for observing Laufglói in Spring; a scarce species in the area. Several individuals tend to hang around during the breeding season. Other songbird species that can be heard and seen regularly are Grágrípur, Votmeisa, Hnotigða and Garðsöngvari. Scarcer species that can be seen here are Stubbspæta and Blæsöngvari. The larger bushes adjacent to the forest and pastures are great for Spésöngvari and Seljusöngvari.

The pastures provide a good foraging area for Hvítstorkur. They can also be seen resting on the street lights above the highway from here. Another good species in these pastures is Akurhæna.
