Description
The Westerplas is one of the best places on Schiermonnikoog for birding. The area used to be a salt marsh that was regularly flooded by the Wadden Sea. In 1964, the salt marsh was diked and the lake was created. The Westerplas is now the largest freshwater lake on the island of Schiermonnikoog. Because most birds cannot drink seawater, it is always packed with birds. The lake has a large breeding colony of Flatnefur (nearly 50 pairs) and Dílaskarfur and also acts as a high-water refuge. When there is high tide on the Wadden Sea, many birds come to rest here.
You can find many different species of ducks, geese, grebes, reed birds and other bird species on the Westerplas. The lake has a nice bird hide and also a bird watching screen. You can walk all the way around the Westerplas and get an unobstructed view of the lake and the birds in various places. Also nice is the dike on the northeast side from where you also have good views of the lake. Birds that you can see on and around the Westerplas include Skeiðönd, Urtönd, Skutulönd, Brandönd, Grafönd, Hvítönd, Hvinönd, Grágæs, Margæs, Helsingi, Keldusvín, Hrossagaukur, Lindastelkur, Bjarthegri, Næturgali and Blábrystingur.

Nederlands: De Westerplas is een van de beste plekken op Schiermonnikoog om vogels te kijken. Het gebied heette vroeger de Westerkwelder en werd regelmatig door de Waddenzee overspoeld. In 1964 is die kwelder ingedijkt en ontstond de Westerplas. De Westerplas is nu de grootste zoetwaterplas op het eiland Schiermonnikoog. Omdat de meeste vogels geen zeewater kunnen drinken, zit het er altijd bomvol met vogels. Het meer heeft een grote broedkolonie van Flatnefur (bijna 50 paar) en Dílaskarfur en fungeert ook als hoogwatervluchtplaats. Als het hoogwater is op de Waddenzee komen veel wadvogels hier rusten.
Je kunt op de Westerplas veel verschillende soorten eenden, ganzen, futen, rietvogels en andere vogelsoorten vinden. Het meer heeft een mooie vogelkijkhut en ook nog een vogelkijkwand. Met zuidenwind schuilen veel vogels hier vaak in de luwte en kun je ze vanaf de vogelkijkhut van heel dichtbij zien, zeker in de winter als het aantal soorten eenden op de plas verreweg het grootst is. Je kunt helemaal om de Westerplas heen lopen en krijgt op diverse plekken vrij uitzicht op het meer en de vogels. Leuk is ook de dijk aan de noordoostkant vanaf waar je mooie uitzichten op het meer hebt. Vogels die je op en om de Westerplas kunt zien zijn onder meer Skeiðönd, Urtönd, Skutulönd, Brandönd, Grafönd, Hvítönd, Hvinönd, Grágæs, Margæs, Helsingi, Keldusvín, Hrossagaukur, Lindastelkur, Bjarthegri, Næturgali en Blábrystingur.

Access
The Westerplas is located directly southwest of the village of Schiermonnikoog. You can walk all the way around the lake (3.5 km). The route passes a bird hide, a bird watching screen and various viewpoints. You can also do three quarters of the route by bike, but the dike path on the northeast side is only accessible on foot. From the village it is approximately 1.5 km walking/cycling to the bird hide. There is a parking space for bicycles (see the P on the map) at the bird hide. From there it is about a 50 meter walk to the bird hide.

Nederlands: De Westerplas ligt direct ten zuidwesten van het dorp Schiermonnikoog. Je kunt helemaal om het meer heen lopen (3,5 km). De route loopt langs een vogelkijkhut, een vogelkijkwand en komt langs diverse uitzichtpunten. Driekwart van de route kun je ook met de fiets doen, maar het dijkpad aan de noordoostkant is alleen te voet toegankelijk. Vanuit het dorp is het ongeveer 1,5 km lopen/fietsen naar de vogelkijkhut. Er is een parkeerplaats voor fietsen (zie de P op de kaart) bij de vogelkijkhut. Vanaf daar is het zo'n 50 meter lopen naar de vogelkijkhut.
