Summer and winter polder with height differences and open water. Meadow bird sanctuary.
The Ryptsjerksterpolder is a strategic point for observing large groups of geese in winter. Especially many Helsingi and Blesgæs, sometimes as many as 10,000s. In the autumn, large groups of ducks are found on the flooded meadows, especially Rauðhöfðaönd, Gargönd, Skúfönd and Stokkönd. Flatnefur and Mjallhegri are increasingly being observed. During the breeding season it is a good area for meadow birds such as Jaðrakan, Vepja, Hrossagaukur and water and marsh birds.

On the west side of Gytsjerk, almost outside the built-up area, the dead end Kooiweg runs on the south side. After approx. 1 km there is a car park with bird hide.
