Description
The Ilperveld is a former brackish peat meadow area, with numerous ditches and canals and reed beds. The vegetation along the ditch sides is rich, a mosaic of swampclover, cuckooflower, winged deer hay, watermint and spoonleaf. The area is extensively managed, here and there cows, sheep and goats graze on the land. Jaðrakan , Vepja , Stelkur , Brúnheiðir , Sefþvari , Keldusvín and many reed birds find their perfect habitat here. During migration and winter, the Ilperveld is a refuge for thousands of passers-by, such as Rauðhöfðaönd, Fjöruspói and various types of geese.
The best way to view the Ilperveld is by boat. The birds generally do not regard boats as a threat, so they can be well observed. The nature conservation organization 'Landschap Noord Holland' regularly organizes boating excursions. At the visitor center of Landschap Noord Holland (Kanaaldijk 32A 1121 NX Landsmeer) boats can also be rented in the summer months. The walking path behind the visitor center is certainly also worth a visit. Here, above the reed collars, there is also a bird hide.
Bird photographers will get their money's worth in the photographyhide of 'Natuurboerderij Hardebol' (Kanaaldijk 28, 1121 NX Landsmeer). This farm extensively manages large parts of the Ilperveld. In addition, they offer bird photographers the opportunity - without disturbance - to take unique images of the meadow and reed birds from their photohide.

Nederlands: Het Ilperveld is een uitgestrekt stil en fraai watergebied met honderden eilanden van trilveen. Het is een voormalig brak veenweidegebied, met talloze sloten en vaarten en rietkragen. De plantengroei langs de slootkanten is rijk, een mozaïek van moerasrolklaver, echte koekoeksbloem, gevleugeld hertshooi, watermunt en lepelblad. Het gebied wordt extensief beheerd, koeien, schapen en geiten begrazen hier en daar het land. Jaðrakan , Vepja , Stelkur , Brúnheiðir , Sefþvari , Keldusvín en vele rietvogels vinden hier hun perfecte biotoop. In de trek- en wintertijd is het Ilperveld een toevluchtsoord voor duizenden passanten, zoals smienten, wulpen en diverse soorten ganzen.
De beste manier om het Ilperveld te bekijken is per boot. De vogels beschouwen boten doorgaans niet als bedreiging waardoor ze zich goed laten observeren. De natuurbeschermingsorganisatie 'Landschap Noord Holland' organiseert regelmatig vaarexcursies. Bij het bezoekerscentrum van Landschap Noord Holland (Kanaaldijk 32A 1121 NX Landsmeer) zijn in de zomermaanden ook boten te huur. Het wandelpad achter het bezoekerscentrum is zeker ook de moeite waard. Hier is, boven de rietkragen, ook een vogelkijkhut.
Vogelfotografen komen helemaal aan hun trekken in de fotografiehut van 'Natuurboerderij Hardebol' (Kanaaldijk 28, 1121 NX Landsmeer). Dit boerenbedrijf beheert op extensieve wijze grote delen van het Ilperveld. Daarnaast bieden zij vogelfotografen de mogelijkheid om - zonder verstoring - vanuit hun fotohut unieke beelden te maken van de weide- en rietvogels.

Access
The area is accessible from Amsterdam (A10; exit S116 or S117) or from Purmerend (A7; exit 4) and is located on the west side of the North Holland Canal. You can park in the parking lot of the visitor center 'Noord Hollands Landschap'. Click on the P in the map for directions. Or, if you have booked the photo hide of 'Natuurboerderij Hardebol', on the grounds of the farm.
