Description
Khukh Nuur is a boomerang-shaped high altitude lake located at 2650m (8700ft). The lake is renowned for its serene beauty, surrounded by rugged mountains. The lake has an island quite close to the shore with a huge breeding colony of Mongolian Gull. Other birds you can observe include Altai Snowcock, Great Cormorant, Ruddy Shelduck, Whooper Swan, Bar-headed Goose, Common Merganser, Little Ringed Plover, Eurasian Black Vulture, Himalayan Griffon, Golden Eagle, Saker Falcon, Black-eared Kite, Common Raven, Red-billed Chough, Northern Wheatear, Citrine Wagtail, Siberian Stonechat, Water Pipit, Brown Accentor, Bluethroat (Red-spotted), Hume's Warbler, Eversmann's Redstart and Pallas's Bunting.

Khukh Nuur lake is located in the Bayankhongor region of Mongolia. Coming from Altaj, it is a long drive via Delger (lake Taigan being worth a stop), Bayanbulag and Gurwanbulag, mostly on an altitude of 2100m plus (6900ft and more). No roads, 4x4 required.
