Wooden walkway through a beautiful patch of mature mangrove forest leading to a pond with crocodiles.
Sendero Petén Mac is a short trail and wooden walkway through mature mangrove forest leading to a pond with crocodiles. The forest is wonderfully cool and the walk between and above the roots of the mangrove trees is short but beautiful. The sendero ends at a small pool with a few crocodiles and dozens of baby crocodiles. The wooden boardwalk elevates you far enough above the water so you don't have to be afraid of the crocodiles and there are also some benches where you can sit quietly to enjoy all the sounds. Plenty of birds in the early morning, but it is not always easy to see them in the dense vegetation. Nevertheless, a beautiful place and highly recommended if you are in the area.
From Rio Lagartos follow the road parallel to the lagoon to the east. Where the road stops is a large sandy parking lot surrounded by mangrove forests. Click on the P in the map for directions or coordinates. In a far corner of this parking lot starts the Sendero Petén Mac.
