The lovely gardens of Hacienda Chichen Resort are a great place for birdwatching.
Unfortunately, bird watching at the Mayan ruins of Chichén Itzá can be disappointing because there are so many visitors and often few birds. But the adjacent Hacienda Chichen Resort does have gardens full of birds and you are usually all alone there. Guests of the resort are of course allowed to visit the gardens. But for non-guests, there is a possibility to visit the gardens, by having a drink or meal in the resort's restaurant. A reservation in advance and permission to visit the gardens are required for this. So you need to contact the resort before your visit (see the info below).
Among the birds that can be observed in the gardens are Keel-billed Toucan, Collared Aracari, Boat-billed Flycatcher, Ocellated Turkey, Cinnamon Hummingbird, Gartered Trogon, Altamira Oriole, Green Jay, Yucatan Jay, Lesson's Motmot and Turquoise-browed Motmot.
Hacienda Chichen Resort is located close to the ancient ruins of Chichén Itzá in the Zona Hoteliera. Click on the P in the map for directions to the resort. If you are not a guest of the resort you need to have permission to visit the gardens. Make sure you contact the resort before your visit on info@haciendachichen.com. Below you see a link to the website of the resort.
