Description
The area around Malta International Airport is at its best in spring, particularly with north-west winds. On good days there can be good numbers of harriers, mostly Brúnheiðir but also Fölheiðir (early-mid spring) and Gráheiðir (mid-late spring). The site can also be good for Kliðfálki and Kvöldfálki (late spring). In practice any migrating species can be seen from the area since it is open, such as flocks of herons, waders, Býsvelgur and Bláhrani. Sandlævirki arrive in spring and remain to breed in small numbers. Other passerines include hirundines, including Brandsvala, and pipits, including Torftittlingur. In late autumn, the site is also one of the best places in Malta to see Heiðlóa and Vepja. Several rarities have been seen here over the years.
