Description

Suyian is fortunate enough to have several different habitats for birdwatching. There are five distinct habitat types supporting a diverse range of flora and fauna; Grass plains, Acacia woodland, Phonolite escarpment, Riverine and a Granitic Inselberg complex.

The riverine vegetation is interesting for water birds like African Fish-eagle, Egyptian Goose, Pied Kingfisher, Knob-billed Duck and Common Sandpiper.

The rocky lava escarpments are home to the beautiful D'Arnaud's Barbet, Fan-tailed Raven, Klaas's Cuckoo, European Roller and Pearl-spotted Owlet.

The grassy plains are a great place to find many birds such as Kori Bustard (which is the world's heaviest flying bird!), White-bellied Bustard, Chestnut-bellied Sandgrouse, Namaqua Dove and Crowned Lapwing. The Long-tailed Widowbird are wonderful to spot after the first rains as they spend hours displaying to females with a magnificent long tail and bright red shoulders.

The Acacia woodland makes up a large part of Suyian. Here you would expect to see the Eastern Chanting-Goshawk, Verreaux's Eagle-Owl, Steppe Eagle, Northern White-crowned Shrike and Nubian Woodpecker.

And last but definitely not least, you can see many birds just sitting in a camp chair at Suyian Soul camp. Such as Vitelline Masked-Weaver, Von der Decken's Hornbill, White-bellied Go-away-bird, Wire-tailed Swallow, White-headed Mousebird and Lesser Blue-eared Starling.
