Description

Remote, rugged and prominently unspoilt, Meru National Park sits on an 870 sq.km area. The park is largely set in the wilderness and strikingly beautiful. In the open savannah, you will be able to spot the Bateleur, Augur Buzzard, Eastern Chanting-Goshawk, Imperial Eagle, Martial Eagle, Long-crested Eagle, White-bellied Bustard, Namaqua Dove, Black-headed Heron, Crowned Lapwing, Senegal Lapwing, Spur-winged Lapwing, Angola Swallow, Lappet-faced Vulture, Red-billed Oxpecker and Golden Pipit.

In and around the thorn bushes and Acacia trees, you can find the African Cuckoo-Hawk, Red-and-yellow Barbet, White-throated Bee-eater, White-headed Buffalo-Weaver, White-browed Coucal, White-bellied Go-away-bird, African Grey Hornbill, Von der Decken's Hornbill, European Roller, Lilac-breasted Roller, Lesser Grey Shrike, Ruppell's Long-tailed Starling, African Golden-Weaver, White-crested Helmetshrike, Chestnut Weaver, Red-headed Weaver, and Black-eared Wheatear.

And around swamps and rivers, you might see the Long-tailed Cormorant, African Mourning Collared Dove, Great Egret, Goliath Heron, Grey-headed Kingfisher, Wood Sandpiper, Yellow-billed Stork, Water Thick-knee, African Pied Wagtail and Palm-nut Vulture.

The park borders Bisanadi National Reserve to the north east and Kora National Park to the south east, so there are even more wild areas to explore.

Meru Park prides itself for the history of the coming together of Joy Adamson’s best-selling book “Born Free”. The script is based on the Adamsons’ lives and research on lions and cheetahs. George and his spouse Joy Adamson are best known through the movie Born Free. The movie based on a true story of Elsa the lioness; an orphaned cub they had rescued, raised and later released into this park.
