Description
The lagoon of Mistras is bordered by the coastal plain and the sea of the Gulf of Oristano. The lagoon has an elongated shape, parallel to the coast. The lagoon is divided into two parts, a western one, with rectilinear banks and regular muddy-sandy bottoms that reach the meter and a half of depth, and an eastern one with more jagged shores, numerous sandy outcrops and depths on average 30-40 cm. The total area is about 450 hectares but only 250 ha are permanently covered by water. The islets within the lake are attractive for birds. Laguna di Mistras is a wintering site for Gjóður. In winter you can see several specimens. Among the other birds you can see in the area are Rauðflæmingi, Fjöruspói, Tildra, Bleikmáfur, Klapparmáfur, Kóralmáfur, Strandlóa, Stelkur, Bjarthegri and Brandönd.

La laguna di Mistras si sviluppa lungo la costa orientale del Sinis di Cabras, ed è delimitata dalla piana costiera e dal mare del Golfo di Oristano. La laguna ha una forma allungata e stretta, parallela alla costa, ed è delimitata verso il mare dal cordone litorale a freccia della spiaggia di Su Siccu verso sud, e da uno più interno verso nord, separati da un'apertura verso mare di circa 300 m. La vegetazione si diversifica con le variazioni del livello dell'acqua e presenta associazioni ben strutturate e floristicamente differenziate, tipiche delle acque salmastre. Gli isolotti all'interno dell'area lacustre consentono una buona strutturazione della vegetazione e un ottimo habitat per la conservazione dell'avifauna.

You can drive, bike or walk along the south side of the lagoon (see the map). Using you car as a bird hide often works good to get close to the birds.
