Description
The LIPU (Italian League for Bird Protection) oasis of Laterza, extends over 800 hectares in the heart of the ravine park. Great place for birding, walking and cycling. Along the 12 km rocky walls, in the numerous caves and in the thick vegetation, large and small birds nest such as the Músvákur, Úfur, Turnugla and numerous other species of birds. Special birds you can see here are Skarngammur, Vatnagleða, Slagfálki, Kolstorkur, Kliðfálki, Úfur, Snákerna and Jörfadepill.

Italiano: La maestosa Gravina di Laterza è un'area protetta che funge da rifugio per moltissime specie di uccelli. Ottima per l'osservazione dell'avifauna, permette anche di percorrere suggestivi sentieri escursionistici lungo le sue pareti. L'Oasi LIPU di Laterza si estende su oltre 800 ettari nel cuore del Parco delle Gravine. È un luogo ideale per il birdwatching, le passeggiate e il ciclismo. Lungo i 12 km di pareti rocciose, nelle numerose grotte e nella fitta vegetazione, nidificano uccelli di varie specie.

To reach the entrance take the state road n. 7 which from Taranto crosses the centers of Massafra, Palagiano and Castellaneta. After passing through the town of Castellaneta, after about 8 kilometers, turn left following the signs Laterza and after having completely crossed the town you will arrive at the Oasis, on the extreme southern periphery. The reserve has a car park, a network of nature trails and a Visitor Center. You can walk into the canyon and back, but it is also possible to do a circular trail of about 11 km. This is the trail you see on the map.

Italiano: Per raggiungere l'ingresso, prendi la strada statale n. 7 che da Taranto attraversa i centri di Massafra, Palagiano e Castellaneta. Dopo aver superato l'abitato di Castellaneta, dopo circa 8 chilometri, svoltate a sinistra seguendo le indicazioni per Laterza; dopo aver attraversato completamente il paese, arriverete all'Oasi, nell'estrema periferia sud. La riserva dispone di un parcheggio, di una rete di sentieri naturalistici e di un Centro Visite. È possibile scendere nel canyon e risalire, ma è anche possibile percorrere un sentiero ad anello di circa 11 km. Questo è l'itinerario indicato sulla mappa.
