The Red Canyon is located north of Eilat close to the Egyptian border in the Southern Negev.
The Red Canyon is part of Wadi Shani, which starts in the Sinai Desert and continues through the Eilat Mountains. The canyon is carved into red sandstone, creating narrow, colorful passages that are visually striking, especially when sunlight hits the reddish rock that lines the canyon. It then glows with an intense reddish color.
While this is a beautiful hike in and of itself to and through the canyon, it is also a really nice spot for birding desert bird species such as the Helludepill , Blackstart , Scrub Warbler , Roðafinka , Berghæna and the Skrækhæna.
Easily accessible from Eilat (20 minutes by car). There is a parking lot near the entrance of the Red Canyon. Press P on the map for directions. From the parking, you can walk different trails with one leading through the Red Canyon. The circular path is around 2 km and can be extended at the two crossroads to your liking.
The path through the Red Canyon itself is a "one-way route". Both the entry and the exit point are marked with a star on the map.
While not difficult to maneuver, parts of this trail have to be climbed. There are steel rod stairs mounted into the canyon to facilitate climbing.
