Description
Grunnafjörður's fertile soil, together with other biological factors, makes the area an eminently suitable habitat for plants and animals. The fjord is the only Ramsar area in Iceland that borders the sea. The size of the area is approximately 1,470 hectares. The fjord is important for many species of birds. The area is internationally important for Margæs, Rauðbrystingur and Sanderla. About 25% of the Margæs population stops in Grunnafjörður on their journeys from mainland Europe to the Arctic in both spring and autumn and about 1% of the Rauðbrystingur population. Many waterfowl, such as Sendlingur, Lóuþræll, Sandlóa and Tjaldur depend on the mudflats for their survival.
