Description
The Christou river is a fairly large wetland and saltmarsh area just west of Skala Kallonis. In general, the area is fairly wet, but this depends on the season and the amount of rainfall during winter. The creek near the ocean, though, always holds water. The wetland area is a great spot for waders, like Háleggur, Strandlóa and Lyngstelkur. During the breeding season, the surrounding sandy areas are used as breeding grounds for Strandlóa and Vatnalóa. Also, the higher parts of the area, mainly just southwest of the closest hotel (see map), is a great spot to observe Tríll.
Around the wetland area, fields are just as foraging ground by harriers, like Brúnheiðir and Bláheiðir. Large flocks of pipits and wagtails can be seen here too. Near the beach, you can observe gulls and terns.
North of the road, you can find the inland part of the river and also some salt marshes. During migration, this part is great to observe waders, storks and egrets, like Bakkatíta and Kolstorkur. You might have the chance to see Bláþyrill during winter here.
