You can find many different species of waterbird here, like waders and ducks. Special ones in the breeding time in spring and others, which stay over in winter.
The Meldorfer Speicherkoog is a very large embanked area with several large lakes of different salinity, offering habitats for a variety of waterbird communities. It belongs to the "Nationalpark Wattenmeer" (Wadden Sea National Park) and is a protected area. Many birds feed on the mudflats and there are many different kinds of herons, waders, geese, ducks and swans to be seen, Sometimes you can see a Haförn passing by or other raptors, falcons, Brúnheiðir and others. But most of all this is a paradise for waterbirds.
Throughout the year: Dílaskarfur, grebes, geese, ducks, waders, gulls, and Kampameisa
November-March: Álft, Grágæs and Blesgæs
March-May: Helsingi;
May: Spóatíta, Rúkragiand Tildra
April-August: Northern Vepja, Jaðrakan.
June- October: Fjöruspói and Sótstelkur
The best vantage points for birdwatching are the road to Meldorfer Hafen (there is an observation tower just off the road), the sea dyke and the observation-hides in the nature sanctuaries of „Kronenloch“ in the north and „Wöhrdener Loch“ in the south.
Next to the protection areas you can park your car, make walks or go by bike. You can observe directly out of the car and mostly that's the best way because that way shy birds don't fly away and stay close to you.
