Description
In winter, the Hurstsee is home to a great number and variety of ducks and other waterbirds. There are good numbers (between 15 and 100+) of Stokkönd, Gargönd, Skúfönd, Skutulönd, Bleshæna and Dílaskarfur.
Smaller groups of Urtönd and Toppgoði can usually be seen scattered across the lake. Nílarönd and Hnúðsvanur are often present, as well as Mjallhegri, Gráhegri, Bláþyrill and Straumerla along the fringes of the lake.
With a bit of luck, you can also see Gulönd, Rauðhöfðaönd, Grafönd, Taumönd (on spring migration) or even a stunning Hvítönd here!
Waterbirds are the main attraction, but the trees and bushes around the lake are worth checking too. There are plenty of common woodland / garden birds, plus a good chance of seeing (or hearing) any of the following: Barrfinka, Kjarnbítur, Dómpápi, Runntítla, Gullkollur, Skógarþröstur and Svartspæta.
