Two artificially created lakes in the early 1950s in a forest area near Heerte. The lakes served as sludge settling ponds for iron ore washing.
Over 300 bird species have been recorded in the area of Heerter See. They include Grátrana, Gjóður, Dílaskarfur and Lindastelkur, who use the lake as a stepping stone on their way to wintering or breeding grounds. A 6 km hike around the Heerter See nature reserve and European bird sanctuary is a special experience for nature lovers. Its salty water provides habitat for special plant species and its shallow shores are ideal for waders.
