Description
Gedenkstätte Stresow is a little memorial of World War II located in the Wendland in midst of a lot of nature. Right next to the memorial is a small lake, where you can often see Hvítönd, Gulönd and several species of duck in Winter.
A few hundred meters futher there is an observation tower with a nice view over the partially flooded meadows and small bodies of water. In winter they are getting used as a wintering and migration place for thousands of ducks and geese such as Grafönd, Hvinönd, Rauðhöfðaönd, Gargönd, Urtönd, Taumönd, Skeiðönd, Skutulönd, Skúfönd, Brandönd, Helsingi, Blesgæs, Akurgæs and Álft. If you are lucky than you can spot a Grásvarri in the bushes.
During migration times many waders visit the area. You can observe Vepja, Lóuþræll, Sandlóa, Vatnalóa, Fjöruspói, Jaðrakan, Lindastelkur, Hrossagaukur, Flóastelkur, Trjástelkur, Sótstelkur, Stelkur, Lyngstelkur and sometimes Rúkragi. On the water bodies you can sometimes spot grebes such as Sefgoði or Dverggoði or see a Bláþyrill.
For a better look there is a route on the dike through the meadows so you can see the whole area from different sides. In the summer there are many swallows and Grátrana , herons and Hvítstorkur. Gráhegri and Mjallhegri are not uncommon, with a bit of luck you even can see a pair of Kolstorkur.
From the power poles, the bushes and out of the reed you can hear the songs of Seftittlingur, Korntittlingur, Gultittlingur, Þyrnisöngvari, Síkjasöngvari, Sefsöngvari, Reyrsöngvari, Vallskvetta, Hagaskvetta, Sönglævirki and see for example Þyrnisvarri or Gulerla.
Over the whole year you can spot many different birds of prey. From the observation tower you can see Brúnheiðir flying over the reed beds, in the whole area Músvákur, Svölugleða and Turnfálki are not uncommon. On very good days you can even see a Förufálki or Býþjór. Also often seen are Vatnagleða, Bláheiðir and Gjóður and sometimes more down by the river Aland in the trees sit one or two Haförn.

Access
Feuchtwiesen Gedenkstätte Stresow is located east of the villages of Kapern and Gummern and north of the village of Aulosen. There are two roads to the memorial Stresow. One is a dirt road from Kapern, safer is the normal road from Aulosen. On the memorial is a parking space, where you can park your car. Press P on the map for directions to the parking. From there it is better to walk or to ride a bike. You can also easily connect the visit with a bike tour through the beautiful landscape of Wendland.
