Description
The wet meadows of Elzwiesen are irrigated in March, August and November. End of March/ start of April and August are the best times to watch migrating birds on the flooded meadows. Common migrating spiecies are Flóastelkur , Rúkragi , Lyngstelkur , Hettumáfur and Taumönd. Also rarer species like Flatnefur , Spói and Jaðrakan can sometimes be found on the irrigated areas.
Breeding birds are Fjöruspói , Vepja , Næturgali and Þyrnisvarri. Many Mjallhegri , Gráhegri and Hvítstorkur can be observed feeding in the area. The meadows are irrigated in steps from south to north. So most times only one part of the area is flooded. Note that the area has limited access from March to June.
