Large forest area of 20,000 hectares. The forest also harbours a beautiful moor.
The Burgwald is comprised of 20,000 hectares of forest areas and is among the largest in Hesse. Great area to combine hiking and birding and a good area for observing owls. The area is home to the Sparrugla and Skálmugla. And of course many woodland birds like tits, woodpeckers and others. The Franzosenwiesen is a moor area that is located in a depression in the middle of the Burgwald. They consist of ecologically valuable moors, wet meadows, still waters and alluvial forests.
The Burgwald has many paths to explore. On the map is shown a 15 km circular walk that runs largely through forest, but also some open fields, along the stream Rotes Wasser and along the Franzosenwiesen. You can park north of the village of Bracht. Click on the P in the map for directions to the parking spot near Bracht. There are many other options for shorter of longer walks and also in other parts of the forest.
