Shallow lake surrounded by alpine meadows that attracts cranes, pelicans, waders and many water birds.
Khanchali Lake is unique among the lakes of the Javakheti Plateau for the sparseness of its water. The maximum depth of the lake is only 0.8 meters, with fresh water that warms up easily and is almost completely covered with water plants. All of this creates the ideal conditions for water birds to feed and rest during migration.
At Khanchali Lake you can see bird species such as Grátrana, Rúkragi, Lyngstelkur, Rauðhegri, Tígulþerna, Ryðönd, Skutulönd, Sefgoði, Stargoði, Hvítstorkur, Leirumáfur, Roðakani, Hrokkinkani and Brúnheiðir.
Khanchali Lake is located in the south of Georgia, west of the town of Ninotsminda, near the the border with Armenia and Turkey. A nice way to explore the lake is a walk from the village of Patara Khanchali on the western side of the lake. The village is a bit higher than the lake and you have a great view of the lake as you begin the three-kilometre hike down towards it. Once you get to the water, turn left and follow the shore until the dam. Press P on the map for directions to Patara Khanchali.
