Description
Île d'Aix is an island of approximately 1.20 km2 with many different habitats. There is a fairly large forest, mainly composed of conifers, but also species of deciduous trees. Among the species present in this environment, you find Barrmeisa , Toppmeisa or Blámeisa. During migration, Flekkugrípur and Garðaskotta are very common. Some raptors are also present, such as Gunnfálki or Sparrhaukur, and, more rarely, Gáshaukur. Other breeding species usually sing in the undergrowth, such as Runntítla, Músarrindill, Söngþröstur and Glóbrystingur.
Among the other areas of the island, there are large cereal crops, in which you can find other bird species, such as Sandhæna, Fashani, Þúfutittlingur, Sönglævirki or Gulerla. Birds of prey are also present, like Turnfálki or Músvákur. In migration, you find other species such as Steindepill or Vallskvetta. In winter, very large groups of Bókfinka, Fjallafinka, Barrfinka and Grænfinka are formed in fields.
Finally, the last main environment is made up of marshes, in which different species nest, such as Háleggur, Bjúgnefja and Hálmsöngvari. In Autumn and Winter, these marshes offer refuge for many species of shorebirds, notably Lóuþræll, Veimiltíta, Sótstelkur, Trjástelkur, Jaðrakan, Fjöruspói, Rauðbrystingur and many others. At low tide, these birds generally feed on the mudflat which surrounds the island. Numerous gulls (breeding birds, migrants and winterers) are present on the island. You can observe Stormmáfur, Silfurmáfur, Klapparmáfur, Sílamáfur, Svartbakur, Hettumáfur, Lónamáfur and also terns like Þaraþerna. Many other rarer species can be observed. The Svölugleða and the Gjóður are two migratory raptors quite present on the island in autumn.

A marrée basse, ces oiseux s'alimentent généralement dans la vasière qui entoure l'île. De nombreus laridés, nicheurs, migrateurs et hivernants sont présents sur l'île. ON peut notament observer les Stormmáfur , Silfurmáfur , Klapparmáfur , Sílamáfur , Svartbakur , Hettumáfur , Lónamáfur et Þaraþerna pour les plus communs. Mais bien d'autres espèces plus rares peuvent être observées. Le Svölugleða et le Gjóður sont deux rapaces migrateurs assez présents sur l'île en automne.

Access
The island is only accessible by boat. Best option is the ferry leaving from Fouras. All year round a daily ferry service connects the island to the Pointe de la Fumée at the far end of the Fouras peninsula. The crossing takes about 20 minutes (for more info on the tickets and time table see the link below). The island itself you can only explore on foot or by bike. You can rent bicycles on the island.

Many rarities have been observed on the island. Some examples: the Hláturmáfur, present from August 24 to September 28, 2018, then from August 20 to 28, 2019. A Gljástari stayed from October 23 to 26, 2014. A Hringmáfur stayed from October 20 to November 1, 2004, then another on February 10, 2018. The Hnoðrasöngvari is also a regular, almost annual, island guest.
