Etang de Canet is a brackish lagoon surrounded by reedbeds, dry grassland and low woodland, separated from the sea by a sand and pebble ridge.
To be honest, birding in the area south to Argeles can be disappointing, due to development and disturbance, So this area is a comparative haven. As well as the open water, the grassland and woods are worth investigation. The outlet to the sea is also of interest.
During spring migration, highish ground to the west of the lagoon outside St Nazaire is a good vantage point to see passage migrants.
The car park is directly accessible from the coast road or by foot from Canet or St Cyprien. In the area, there are footpaths but it may be necessary to push through bushes to get to the waterside.
Take food and water. By the carpark on the coast road is a reconstruction of fishermen's huts. Apart from historic interest, they attract some birds.
