Description
Luitemaa Nature Reserve is a wetland complex on the south-western coast of Estonia that consists of diverse coastal and inland habitats including shallow sea, capes and islands, coastal meadows and reed-beds. The coastal meadows near Võiste have shallow waters that attract large amounts of dabbling ducks (Gargönd, Stokkönd, Taumönd, Rauðhöfðaönd, Urtönd and so on), Brandönd and swans. The wide coastal meadows and lagoons are favored by geese. Most common are Grágæs and Helsingi. Rarer gooses like Blesgæs, Heiðagæs, Kanadagæs, Fagurgæs, Margæs, Akurgæs (serrirostris) and Akurgæs are often found during migration.
The sandbanks and lagoons are great spots for wading birds. Most common breeding birds are Stelkur, Sandlóa, Tjaldur, Heiðlóa, Vepja, and Rúkragi. During migration Sótstelkur, Bjúgnefja, Lóuþræll, Veimiltíta, Bakkatíta, Rauðbrystingur, Spóatíta, Fjöruspói and Spói have been recorded.
