Description
Less famous than the neighboring bigger nature reserve of Veliko Blato, the wetland of Malo Blato is nevertheless very much worth a stop. The tall grasses attract many Gráheiðir. In spring and summer you can often see several pairs hovering above the area. A great sight and it makes Malo Blato one of the best places in Croatia to observe or photograph Gráheiðir. Other birds that you have a chance to see in the area are Fjöruspói, Steinhæna, Herfugl, Tríll and Sandtittlingur. The wetland is also a popular migration corridor, which means that during migration a variety of bird species make a stop here and surprises are always possible.
There is a walkable track past a small bird observation tower at the southwest corner of the marsh. Don't expect too much of the observation tower, as it is quite low and so small that you can barely fit two people in it. Moreover, the dilapidated condition, makes you wonder whether it would be better to just skip the watchtower. Still, if the grass is tall, the higher position of the tower can be useful nonetheless.
