Lake with salty water that does not freeze over during the winter months and therefore attracts many water birds.
The Put van Vlissegem was created by the extraction of sand and clay and has salty water. Because the lake does not freeze over during the winter months, the lake attracts wintering water birds such as Rauðhöfðaönd, Skeiðönd, Grafönd, Urtönd and Stargoði. Breeding birds include Síkjasöngvari, Keldusvín, Dverggoði, Brandönd and Skúfönd. During migration there is a chance of seeing wading birds such as Sótstelkur, Lyngstelkur, Trjástelkur, Lindastelkur and Rúkragi. There is a bird hide on the western bank of the lake.
