Description
The Ballewijer nature reserve is enclosed in the urban areas of Zonhoven and Molenheide. The area consists of two ponds. The ponds with their reed beds are of great value for waterfowl, amphibians and dragonflies. The edge of the marsh and ponds is a biotope that mainly attracts Blábrystingur and Keldusvín. The marsh contains both Skógarsnípa and Hrossagaukur. The small reed beds are home to breeding birds like Sefsöngvari and Seftittlingur. Other birds that you can see are Gjóður, Rindilþvari, Toppgoði, Dverggoði, Taumönd, Gargönd, Skúfönd, Skutulönd and Skeiðönd and also waders during bird migration.
