Description

The two lakes of Lake Walyungup are usually discrete but in wet winters the flats can become inundated to the extent that they can ‘join’ the lakes together so as to make the lakes part of the walk ‘not do-able’.

The flats themselves are bounded by Tuart, Swamp Banksia, acacia and lower littoral vegetation. The suggested walk proceeds through bushland at the north western corner of the reserve and then runs onto the flats. The ‘suggested’ walk is just that; a suggestion, as once on the flats the visitor may easily proceed in any direction desired as there is no formal pathway.

Nevertheless the northern shore of the southern lake is easily the most scenic part of the flats and comprises a ‘landscape’ of fossilised thrombolites. Once in this area there is almost a 'wilderness' feel to the place even though suburbia is only two kilometers distant.

Birders will find a suite of bushbirds on the bushland part of the walk but once on the flats (with the occasional exception of White-fronted Chat and Australian Pipit) water associated birdlife dominates.

While bird densities on the flats are generally low, interesting assemblages often occur. On the lakes themselves bird numbers are usually dominated by Hoary-headed Grebe, Musk Duck and Australian Pelican.
