Between Caldicot and Caerwent, this SSSI is a broad river valley which floods most winters, attracting wildfowl and waders from the Severn estuary.
Nedern Brook Wetlands is an area of rough and cultivated pasture, scrub and some trees. Breeding birds such as Piroslábú cankó, sárga billegető, Szürke légykapó and Nádi sármány, augmented when flooded by passage waders, Kis hattyú, up to 1,000 Fütyülő réce, Kis kócsag, Pásztorgém and Szürke gém. In dry summers, persicaria, yellow rattle, willowherb and thistles abound, providing food for finches.
Easy access from M48 or M4. Car parks (free) at west end of interesting Roman village of Caerwent, or at Caldicot castle. 3 small laybys on Crick to Caldicot road, opposite David Broome Equestrian Centre. Footpaths cross the area but inaccessible when flooded. Click on a P in the map to get directions to a parking.
