The town of Lyme Regis is in South West Dorset close to the Devon border.
Amongst natural history, two people stand out that were born in Lyme Regis, Mary Anning born in 1799 changed the way scientists thought about the history of the earth. She searched for fossils along the cliffs near Lyme Regis and at 12 years old discovered and identified the first Ichthyosaur. The coast around Lyme Regis is popularly known as the Jurassic Coast and is a World Heritage Site. Renowned ornithologist John Gould was born in the town in 1804. Gould's work is referenced in Charles Darwin's On The Origin Of Species.
Probably the most well known part of the town is The Cobb, a stone harbour breakwater that has been damaged many times by Winter storms. Tengeri partfutó can be found around this area, whilst it is possible to walk on the Cobb. BEWARE of storm conditions can become TREACHEROUS. Also during Spring/Autumn migration and during Winter the surrounding beaches hold Parti lile, Csigaforgató and kőforgató. The longish Monmouth Beach is worth checking for waders, especially 3+ hours before high tide. The smaller Church Cliff Beach is worth close checking of the usual large Gull flock that often roost there for more unusual species. During Autumn/Early Winter storms with strong onshore winds Kis sirály, Nagy halfarkas, Ékfarkú halfarkas, Nyílfarkú halfarkas and even Fecskesirály get forced close to shore. Be sure to check trees/scrubland and Longmoor and Lister Gardens for landbirds especially during Spring/Autumn migration, Házi rozsdafarkú are often seen and sometimes overwinter. The River Lim runs through the town and both Vízirigó and hegyi billegető can be found.
Press STARS on map for location of above sites.
The A3052 main road from Seaton (in Devon), follows the coast and eventually passes straight through Lyme Regis. On entering the town on the A3052 either use large Holbush Long Stay car park (Fee Payable) or better still use Monmouth Beach car park (Fee Payable). For the beach car park follow signs to Harbour & Cobb/Beaches & Boat Trips.
As is common with South West seaside locations, Lyme Regis can become very busy during the Summer months and car parks fill up very early in the day.
